Planting Herbs in Pudsey
Hannah
With Herbs And Dragonflies I did a tree-planting walk in Black Carr Woods in Pudsey. It was to go with West Yorkshire Archives’ project to put all their old maps of Leeds online so they invited us to their launch party at Leeds Museum.

They also asked us to show the people there the activities we usually do with children, such as planting herbs. There is a big map of Leeds painted on the floor of the museum so this is 2 volunteers trying to plant herbs in Pudsey!

The photo is of my community group Herbs & Dragonflies when we were making birdboxes to put up on the allotments in Bramley, Leeds in May 2009. We made around 20 on the day and gave them all to the allotment holders.

I think this image is both relevant and important even though it may not look it at first. There are a few buzzwords I would like to put down to explain why: reflection, youth, notice, affordable and ignorant.
It is just an image of me and a friend in front of a shop window. But it was taken from a mobile phone camera – because you do not need expensive equipment to get a point across, use what you have. It is a reflection of youth, travelling, exploring and generally finding out what’s about through play of ignorance. We did not know our surroundings, we weren’t part of the community already in place and we had no goal. But I took the image through a reflection of a shop window to show all these things, and to show the importance of just being.

DofE Mural

Mural
Duke of Edinburgh Award Winner from Mirfield
Young people involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Mirfield produced a large mural to promote the good things about their community.  It includes a large map of the area and pictures of famous people that have been associated with the town.  These include actor Patrick Stewart, The Brontie Sisters and Robin Hood.
The mural encourages people to visit the local area which has really benefited from the creativity, commitment and the hard work of the local young people.

Young people helped to clear the litter and weeds from the canal tow path and surrounding area.  They were then able to site the seven sculptures they had designed and built depicting the industrial heritage of the town.
The sculpture trail encourages people to visit the local area which has really benefited from the creativity, commitment and the hard work of the local young people.

I am in Herbs And Dragonflies. We do things to teach people about gardening and the environment. We go to carnivals showing kids how to plant herbs. We make bird boxes, pull up weeds, plant trees, grow plants and other things too.

We also add ideas to our website about growing plants and film video tips for it as well.

This is a snail climbing up a wall. We do crafts to encourage people to love wildlife and not be scared of it
